The basics of groundwork - Bowing exercises - Collection - Lateral movements. Piaffe, Passage, Spanish walk, canter.
During her running and horse training career, Kathrin Roida gradually developed a deep appreciation for the benefits of gymnastic exercises, especially those that can be taught to the horse from the ground.
"This training has long been used to help develop the dressage horse, making its body more supple and at the same time preparing its mind to understand the movements that will eventually be expected under saddle.
Roida relies on these techniques when working with young horses, preparing them for training under saddle with exercises first learned on the ground, improving balance and increasing confidence.
Roida also uses in-hand techniques to vary the training of the fully trained riding horse and to solve problems that might be more safely addressed from the ground. In this book, she describes her methods, sharing the stories of several horses of different ages, breeds, and training backgrounds, and demonstrating the steps for teaching them: shoulder-in, travers, renvers, pirouettes, half-pass, piaffe, passage, canter, the Spanish walk, and much more.
Her careful attention to what is best for the horse ensures that the lessons not only result in a horse that is healthy in body, but also one that is healthy and happy in its work.
